WET DOG FOOD VERSUS DRY DOG FOOD - WHICH IS BETTER?

WET DOG FOOD VERSUS DRY DOG FOOD - WHICH IS BETTER?

Pet owners always ask themselves whether they should serve their dog(s) wet or dry dog food. There are always numerous debates in our office about it, and we seem to be split here! Let us present the facts to you so that you may make a better informed decision for your furry one.

WET VS. DRY FOOD

There are benefits to both dry and wet dog food. However, where there are benefits, there are also drawbacks. The decision on what to serve your dog is more than just simple, you want to make sure he or she is happy and getting the nutrients he or she needs. One one hand, dry dog kibble is very easy to store, and just as easy to serve, whereas wet dog food is a bit more difficult (and messy). Wet also may contain fewer grains but have more protein.

BENEFITS OF DRY DOG FOOD

  • Extremely easy to store and measure
  • Helps dog digestion by hardening stool
  • Lower cost
  • Has dental benefits

DRAWBACKS OF DRY DOG FOOD

  • There may be additives that are sprayed on in order to make dry kibble more attractive to animals. In fact, the API (Animal Protection Institute), some dry foods are sprayed with animal fat which is extremely unnecessary and unhealthy for your dog
  • Tends to be high in gluten

BENEFITS OF CANNED (WET) FOOD

  • Canned dog food will usually contain more protein than dry dog food. This can be beneficial to your dog depending on his or her dietary needs
  • Wet dog food contains more moisture which helps to keep your dog hydrated and supports a healthy urinary tract
  • Your dog may find wet dog food more attractive and appealing than dry dog food
  • Wet dog food, since it is canned, has a long shelf life

DRAWBACKS OF CANNED FOOD

  • It has been noted that some dogs gain weight when on a wet dog food diet
  • There is a short shelf life once opened. It must be refrigerated and there is more maintenance required

EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES

As always, if your dog has specific issues then it is best to consult your veterinarian for food recommendations. Dogs are smart and will form their own opinion on the food you serve. Dogs will also react differently to different diets. Some diets will give your dog more energy, while some may make your dog more lethargic. Some dogs need high protein diets, while some dogs need high carb diets.

Age: Keep in mind that young and senior dogs do better with wet food due to the added moisture. It keeps them hydrated and it is easier on the teeth.

Overweight Dogs: For overweight dogs, you may want to focus on high protein since it will make them feel more full at the time of feeding and will keep them full longer. High protein dry dog food would also be sufficient here.

Medical Conditions:

  • Diabetes: A low-carb diet is best.
  • Epilepsy: It is thought that a high-protein diet, whether dry or wet, may reduce seizures.
  • Food Allergies: Dogs are sometimes allergic to dairy, wheat and beef. A duck and potato or chicken and rice diet is often recommended and can be accomplished with either dry or wet food.
  • Hyperactivity: It is thought that a low-protein diet is best, which can easily be achieved with dry kibble.

TRY TO MIX IT UP

Whether you decide dry dog food is best or wet dog food is best, your dog will certainly benefit from a bit of a mixup here and there (unless specific medical conditions prevent this). Experts suggest that the most balanced diet is a mix of both wet and dry dog food. Keep in mind that supplements can also be added to keep the food you are serving healthy for your dog.
